He returned to Spain in 1566 and began work on his Brief and Summary Relation of the Lords of New Spain, from which the above text is excerpted. Although he was writing well before the development of the germ theory of disease, he did observe how Spanish mistreatment of Indians predisposed them to disease and an early death.”
