This is from the book, The Wretched of the Earth: The Handbook for the Black Revolution that is Changing the Shape of the World. The author states: “National liberation, national renaissance, the restoration of nationhood to the people, commonwealth: whatever may be the headings used or the new formulas introduced, decolonization is always a violent phenomenon. At whatever level we study it–relationships between individuals, new names for sports clubs, the human admixture at cocktail parties, in the police, on the directing boards of national or private banks–decolonization is quite simply the replacing of a certain “species” of men by another “species” of men. Without any period of transition, there is a total, complete, and absolute substitution.”

From article: “This article provides an evidence-based review of the growing field of food justice, which seeks to understand how inequalities of race, class and gender are reproduced and contested within food systems. Analyzing a database of peer-reviewed articles and books related to food justice in the US context (n = 200), we find that food justice is a highly interdisciplinary research area organized around three central axes: social movement activism, the development of alternative food practices, and analyses of inequalities in conventional and alternative food systems.”

One of Latin America’s most cherished and admired literary figures, Eduardo Galeano was an Uruguayan author, who raised his voice incessantly for human rights and social justice. He was a severe critic of globalization and highlighted the dehumanizing facets of globalization in the contemporary world. One of South America’s most renowned writers, he was an ambassador of Latin American history and provided the world an insight into their culture, heritage and struggles, through his passionate and honest writing.

Poem available at the website, Dissident Voice, which is an Internet newsletter “dedicated to challenging the distortions and lies of the corporate press and the privileged classes it serves.” Website is copyrighted, but content is available to the public. This poem was performed by the poet to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the revolutionary community organizing group the Young Lords. The group called for self-determination for all Puerto Ricans, community control of institutions and land, freedom for all political prisoners and the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam, Puerto Rico and other areas. The Young Lords would also play a pivotal role in spreading awareness of Puerto Rican culture and history, leaving a legacy still felt today.

This is just a short clip. The entire video has to be purchased. This documentary is still the best documentary on the Young Lords by one of its participants. In the midst of the African American liberation struggle, protests to end the Vietnam War and the women’s movement for equality, Puerto Rican and Latinx communities fought for economic, racial and social justice.

The entire documentary is copyrighted and has to be purchased. However, the library has a VHS copy in the Media Collection Reserve (VHS-1637).

As an alternative source, “The Young Lords: A Reader”, with Iris Morales as an editor, has a chapter on women in the Young Lords. This book is available as an ebook in the library, using your John Jay login.

“Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords: 1969-1976” by Iris Morales, 2016, is published by Red Sugar Cane Press, 2016. It is not available online, nor in the library catalog. This the first book about the experiences of the women members — a “story within a story” told from the inside out. The Young Lords Organization emerged in New York in the late sixties to fight poverty, racial and gender inequality, and the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Women in the Young Lords organized to build a people’s movement and fought the “revolution within the revolution” believing that women’s equality was inseparable from the society’s progress as a whole.

Written and edited by Iris Morales, THROUGH THE EYES OF REBEL WOMEN consists of essays, interviews, and primary source documents. Morales chronicles the revolutionary rise of the Young Lords, the role and contributions of its women members, and the group’s decline.

“Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords: 1969-1976” by Iris Morales, 2016, is a copyrighted book and not available in the John Jay library. However, the alternative source listed above is available in the library as an ebook using a John Jay login.

Article explores the impact of globalization on Puerto Rico (PR) & argues for the development of a revolutionary program. The establishment of the Boricua-Macheteros’ Popular Army & its struggle for independence from neocolonial policy are introduced. The Macheteros’ analyses of globalization, neoliberalism, & privatization are presented with attention to the role of the US & implications for PR. Internal factors that may be problematic in the construction of a revolutionary program in PR are evaluated.
