“People who live in California deny the past,” asserts Alejandro Murguía. In a state where “what matters is keeping up with the current trends, fads, or latest computer gizmo,” no one has “the time, energy, or desire to reflect on what happened last week, much less what happened ten years ago, or a hundred.” From this oblivion of memory, he continues, comes a false sense of history, a deluded belief that the way things are now is the way they have always been.

“Macaria’s Daughter” is from the book, The Hammon and the Beans and Other Stories by Americo Paredes, Arte Público Press, 2017.  Click here for a book review.

In his stories, Paredes explores the friction that frequently occurs within and between cultures at such points of difference as ethnicity, language, gender, class, and family role. Macaria’s Daughter is a murderous tale of male dominance and female virtue where there is a sacrifice between an altar of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the marriage bed of two distinct cultures. This story is set in south Texas and surprises the reader with the murder of a beautiful young woman named Marcela. She is found in the bedroom, lying on the floor in a pool of blood, 30 to 40 knife stabs decorate her breasts, while the local men gaze indifferently on her lifeless body.

“Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords: 1969-1976” by Iris Morales, 2016, is published by Red Sugar Cane Press, 2016. It is not available online, nor in the library catalog. This the first book about the experiences of the women members — a “story within a story” told from the inside out. The Young Lords Organization emerged in New York in the late sixties to fight poverty, racial and gender inequality, and the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Women in the Young Lords organized to build a people’s movement and fought the “revolution within the revolution” believing that women’s equality was inseparable from the society’s progress as a whole.

Written and edited by Iris Morales, THROUGH THE EYES OF REBEL WOMEN consists of essays, interviews, and primary source documents. Morales chronicles the revolutionary rise of the Young Lords, the role and contributions of its women members, and the group’s decline.

Short story from The New Yorker. July 24, 2017.  In a purgatory-like immigration center, a woman awaits the arrival of her son, who got separated from her as they were trying to get to the United States. This is a story about refugees and all they go through to come to this country.

This article talks about how women have to be constantly aware of their surroundings and afraid that they will get mugged or raped.

Article explores how emerging democracies achieve transitional justice and build the rule of law.  This diverse set of books is part of the growing body of literature that explores how emerging democracies achieve transitional justice and build the rule of law. As nations across Latin America struggle to consolidate democracy, we have witnessed a surge of promising scholarship on the conditions under which the rule of law emerges. Each of these four empirically rich books is a welcome contribution to our understanding of the rule of law and justice in Latin America and beyond. Moreover, the four authors employ diverse methodologies, and the results of their work demonstrate the value of methodology.

Communities of color – Latinx, African Americans and Native Americans, in particular – are the most affected by this alarming expansion of the US prison population.
